Case Study: Prima Frutta

Prima Frutta Expansions

Starting in 2014, FloStor has provided engineering and conveyor systems for the Prima Frutta facility with continuing success. As Prima Frutta expanded and became a premium supplier of cherries and apples, they reached out to FloStor for design support for their expanding processing facility. They needed a robust conveyor system that could handle the increased output of fresh cherries. Their product was split between domestic and export which created a challenge.

FloStor started developing conveyor systems to produce controlled product flow to the palletizing areas throughout the facility. The decision was made to go overhead with the transport of multiple production lanes which allowed the free flow of traffic underneath for forklifts, maintenance vehicles, and personnel.

Once the product was transported to the palletizing area, another bottleneck occurred. The rates were increasing, and the area was becoming overcrowded with pallets, personnel, and containers.

During the process, it was determined some additional type of conveyor would be required to improve the thruput and process flow in the palletizing room. After multiple design meetings with the owner and department heads, it was decided to go with a Hytrol ProSort Narrow Belt Sortation System. This type of system helped increase their production by 30%.

When the merging of the products prior to palletizing became a bottleneck. FloStor provided a 2-to-1 merge and a 3-to-1 merge to help facilitate the induction to the sorter at a steady rate with optimum gapping.

FloStor also supplied Prima Frutta with a vertical conveyor spiral to free up additional floorspace. A special Hytrol “Curve-Merge” allowed 2 lines from opposite sides to merge onto a 90 degree blended curve creating a single output.
